FLEET STATUS REPORT

January 1, 2010

The following is a status report for the US surface fleet. This report will generally be updated every game month during Stage I of this MBX (though not always). For status of subs, see the US Submarine Status Report.

For current status of at-sea NATO patrols, see the status report on NATO standing naval forces.

Notes:

All units are considered operational and fully maintained as of January 1, 2009, unless otherwise noted.

All ships are considered to be operating in the same location as the rest of the group to which it is assigned, unless otherwise noted.

Crews begin to lose both morale and combat effectiveness after 3 months at sea. A 10-day visit to any foreign port of call will restore morale and combat effectiveness to some degree and arrest any further decline for a period of one month. After 6 months at sea, morale and efficiency will continue to decline regardless of how many foreign ports a ship visits. Visits to foreign ports must be scheduled at least a month ahead of time.

A visit to a ship's home port for 10 days or more will restore a ship's combat effectiveness to 100% and morale to 75%. An added 10-day liberty (20 days total) will restore morale to 100%.

The chance of equipment failure increases the longer ships are at sea. A 10-day layover in a US naval base will reduce the chances of a breakdown to its lowest probability.

Once a breakdown occurs, the time it will take to repair it will be assessed on a case by case basis. Some problems can be repaired while under way. Severity of the breakdown will depend on the nature of the equipment, availability of parts and other [die roll] factors.

Ships must be maintained on a yearly basis. Routine maintenance for all ships is 10 days every 3 months and one month per year. Anything less than this will increase the chance of a breakdown.

ETR = Estimated Time of Repair

Additional info:

The AOE ships are fast replenishment vessels which can supply fuel, munitions and stores to the entire battlegroup. They are either Supply or Sacramento class ships and have a top speed of around 26 knots, so they have no trouble keeping up with the groups. There are only 8 of them, 4 per fleet, so they are generally assigned to the groups which are deployed at sea. The AO, AE and AFS ships are older vessels which have been transferred to MSC. If assigned to resupply a battlegroup, there generally be 1 x AO plus 1 x AE and/or AFS (see CARGRU 12). Their top speed is around 20 knots, so they will be able to keep up most of the time. If the group has to move any faster than that they'll be left behind, probably with a DD/FFG split off from the CVBG as escort. If you send a carrier group to sea and all of the AOEs are assigned elsewhere, you will have to assign MSC ships to the group.
