Polish National Army

Pro-Government Forces of Poland

Background:

On September 1, 2009, a neo-Socialist Party candidate was elected President in a surprise upset, leading to widespread protests and suspicions of a rigged election. By year's end the growing revolt had escalated into full-fledged civil war, precipitating Russia's entry into Poland under the banner of preserving the peace and stability of its western frontier. Unfortunately, due to the historical mistrust of Russia and its suspicious ties with the newly elected socialist President, the majority of the population outside of the Warsaw district has risen up in opposition to both the Russians and the new government, leading to the formation of the Free Polish Army (FPA). This pro-Western army is made up of some six brigades from the former Polish 2nd Korps and threatens to move on Warsaw and remove the current leadership from office and may be receiving support from NATO.

A few brigades, however, remain loyal to the newly elected Polish government and welcome Russian intervention -- at least in the short term. These are mostly units from the Polish 1st Korps whose traditional mission is to guard the Warsaw government, and continue to carry out that mission under a slightly revised name, the Polish National Army. While none of these brigade commanders may like the idea of Russian troops entering their homeland they realize that allying with Russia is their only hope of preserving the new socialist state. Thus, they have agreed to act in cooperation with the Russian Army and will accept Russian leadership until such time as the FPA is crushed and order is restored.

Obviously this alliance between the Polish National Army and Russia is a tenuous one, and any conflicts between these two armies such as disputes over mission assignments or excessive collateral damage could lead to further defections or sabotage. Managing these forces and maintaining their effectiveness in the coming war will therefore take a deft and careful hand.

Still, despite this army's depleted numbers and the confused chaos that surrounds these forces right now, their strategic location in the Warsaw district combined with their knowledge of the local geography as well as FPA tactics and leadership cannot be underestimated.

Status as of Jan. 1:

This army is located in the Warsaw district of Poland.

Remaining Units

1st Korps

Background:

The 1st Korps is merely a shell of its former size due to massive defections at the outbreak of civil war a few months earlier. Only three understrength brigades remain, and even these units may deliver questionable performance due to low morale among its troops and potential loyalty issues among its commanders. Purging these brigade commanders and replacing them with younger, more loyal officers would solve this problem, but would introduce leadership issues, delays and possibly an occasional lack of coordination between the component brigades due to the reduced staff and support elements. As one can see, it will take careful handling of this Korps to ensure that it remains combat effective during the first critical weeks of the war.
